ASTROLOGICAL HOUSES

What is an astrological house and what does it mean? They are simply a way of dividing up your birth chart. The time and location of your birth help to divide up the chart. They are numbered courter-clockwise from 1 - 12, and each house represents a different sphere of your life. The division starts at the eastern horizon, which is where we find our ascendant or rising sign, and then rotating down under the horizon. The ascendant is the cusp of our first house.

There are many different ways to divide up the chart devised by many different astrologers over the course of the centuries. Some have a different sign on the cusp of each house and some don't - meaning, for example, that Scorpio can be on your 12th house cusp and your first house like it is in mine, putting Taurus on the 6th and 7th house cusps. Therefore two signs (Leo and Aquarius) or completely contained in their houses and don't lie on a cusp. They co-rule the house and can add more meaning to it.

The first house represents the self - your physical appearance, traits and characteristics, first impressions, your general outlook into the world, your ego, beginnings and iniatives.

The second house is that of value - material and immaterial things of value, money, our belongings, property, things we acquire, and self-worth

The third house is that of communication - our mental facilities, writing, listening, speaking, also lower education and childhood environments, our siblings, our neighborhood, short and local travel and transportation.

The fourth house is that of home and family - our ancestry, heritage, roots, early foundation and environment, it can represent our mother or mother figures - our caretaker and that of our house. It can also represent the cyclic end of matters.

The fifth house is that of pleasure - recreational and leisure activities, things we do for fun and entertainment, games and gambling, children, love affairs and sex, and our creative self-expression.

The sixth house is that of our health - our overall well-being, routine tasks and duties, skills and training, jobs, employment, service we do for others, caretaking, pets, and small domestic animals.

The seventh house is that of our partnerships - close, confidante-like relationships, marriage and business partnerships, agreements, treaties, also matters dealing with diplomatic relations, open enemies, and our attraction to qualities we admire from the other partner.

The eighth house is that of reincarnation - it includes cycles of death and rebirth, intimate sexual relationships, joint resources, other people's resources, matters of the occult, psychic and things that are taboo, and that of self-transformation and regeneration.

The ninth house is that of philosophy - it includes foreign travel and countries, culture, long distance travel, religion, law, ethics, our higher education, things that expand our mind

The tenth house is that of social status - the house of our career as opposed to job, our ambitions, motivations, and social status or public appearance, it includes government, authority and can represent our father or father figure.

The eleventh house is that of friendships - it covers our friends and acquaintances, groups, clubs, societies, our higher associations, benefits and fortunes from our career, and also our hopes and wishes.

The twelfth house is that of self-undoing - it includes mysticism, places of seclusion and isolation like hospitals, prisons, and institutions, it includes things that are not yet obvious to the person, things that are hidden, elusive, clandestine, secretive, or unknown. It's where we go to retreat, reflect, and perform self-sacrifices. It encompasses or unconscious self and unknown enemies.

Each house is ruled by a particular planet and naturally corresponds to one of the 12 signs starting with Aries on the first house and ending with Pisces on the 12th. Personally, we can all have one of the 12 different signs on each house cusp and therefore the houses in our own charts will be ruled by the planets that rule that sign or lie within the house. Planets that rule our houses simply have an effect in that area of our life, especially when they are transited by the planets as they continue their movement through the zodiac. For example, in my chart Taurus is on my seventh house cusp, and naturally this house is associated with Libra. Venus actually rules both signs of Taurus and Libra and therefore influences my relationships. Anytime the moving planets make an angle to the position Venus was located natally in my chart it is sure to have an effect on my partnerships - romantic and business.
